Intent

At our primary school, we believe that every child can be successful in mathematics. Our curriculum is designed to build strong foundations, nurture curiosity, and develop confident, independent learners who enjoy working with numbers and solving problems.

Our intent is to:

  • Develop children’s fluency in the fundamentals of mathematics so they can recall and apply knowledge quickly and accurately.
  • Encourage logical thinking and reasoning skills, helping children to explain their methods and explore different ways to solve problems.
  • Foster a positive attitude towards maths by creating a learning environment where mistakes are seen as learning opportunities and effort is celebrated.
  • Deliver a broad and balanced curriculum that builds knowledge step-by-step and supports all pupils to make progress, regardless of their starting point.
  • Use real-life contexts to make learning meaningful and to help children make connections across mathematical ideas.
  • Support children to use correct mathematical language to communicate their thinking clearly and confidently.
  • Prepare pupils for the next stage of their education by giving them the mathematical tools they need for everyday life and future learning.

We want our children to leave primary school as confident, enthusiastic mathematicians who see maths as a useful, exciting, and achievable subject.

Our Curriculum Approach and Schemes

From Reception to Year 6, we use White Rose Maths (WRM) to help pupils of all ages develop a deep understanding of mathematics as they progress through the curriculum. The scheme supports fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving and ensures a consistent, step-by-step progression of knowledge and skills across year groups.

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Maths Provision

2-Year-Old Provision
Children are exposed to number stories and songs on a daily basis and introduced to early mathematical language through play. They repeatedly engage in number action songs to recognise numbers as a word, symbol, and value. The children begin to explore size, shape, and pattern through planned activities in the provision and start to recognise familiar routines.

Nursery Provision
Children in Nursery follow the Warkworth Mathematical Plan, building on the skills introduced in the 2-year-old provision. They focus on numbers one to five, recognising numerals, counting, values, and quantities. They also learn more about shape, pattern, and measures. As their understanding deepens, they begin to compare amounts, identifying more and less, and compare size, length, and height. In the summer term, before starting Reception, children move onto Numberblocks planning, which helps them dig deeper into the knowledge and skills developed in Nursery. This focuses more on problem solving, reasoning, and understanding the composition of numbers.

Reception
In Reception, we follow the NCETM ‘Mastering Number’ and White Rose Maths (WRM) scheme, which supports children in developing a deeper level of mathematical thinking. Children work with numbers 0–10, identifying numerals, amounts, compositions, and using comparison skills. They begin simple addition and subtraction, developing a solid understanding of number bonds to ten using concrete materials. They also explore how numbers can be represented in different ways, and begin recording their findings independently. Daily routines help to support their developing understanding of time and the world around them.
