At Warkworth CofE Primary School, we aim to inspire the next generation of engineers, architects, designers, chefs, and technologists.
We view Design and Technology as a rigorous and practical academic subject, and believe that a deep understanding of DT forms part of every child’s cultural capital entitlement. It enables children to use their God-given creativity and problem-solving abilities to shape the world for the better, in line with our school vision, values, ethos, and mission.
DT gives children the opportunity to design and make products that solve real and meaningful problems. This process develops their creativity, imagination, and resilience, encouraging them to consider their own and others’ needs, wants, and values. While DT draws on knowledge from other subjects such as Science, Maths, and Art, we teach it explicitly as a distinct subject – valuing its unique approaches to thinking, making, and evaluating.
Through the Kapow Design and Technology scheme, children are encouraged to be innovative and resourceful thinkers who understand the product design cycle: ideation, creation, and evaluation. We want pupils to develop the confidence to take risks, to draft design concepts, to model, test, and refine ideas, and to reflect critically on their work and the work of others.
Our DT curriculum also fosters an awareness of the impact of design and technology on society, inspiring children to become enterprising citizens equipped with the skills and vision to contribute to future innovations.
