Art
At Warkworth CofE Primary School, we recognise that Art is a vital part of children’s cultural literacy — a way to marvel at God’s creation and to express the richness of human experience. Art allows children to think creatively, to communicate beyond words, and to engage with beauty, emotion, and meaning. It is both a discipline and a form of cultural capital: “the best that has been thought and said.”
Our Art curriculum is not simply about fulfilling the National Curriculum requirements. It is part of our Christian mission to give children access to a deep body of artistic knowledge, both theoretical and applied. It aims to nurture curiosity, skill, and imagination so that children can create, think, and see more artfully throughout their lives.
We want our children to:
Develop a broad knowledge of art history, from classical European artists to diverse contemporary creators.
Understand art as a living subject, relevant to all people, past and present.
Develop technical skills and confidence across a range of media and disciplines.
Use art as a way of expressing ideas, exploring identity, and responding to the world.
Value art as both an individual and collective experience that enriches lives.
Art is taught explicitly as a subject, but is also woven throughout the wider curriculum, appearing in contexts such as History, RE, and English. This integrated approach ensures that art is not isolated, but part of a rich, connected learning experience.
Through Art, children at Warkworth gain more than skills — they develop an enduring appreciation of creative expression and the ability to approach the world with curiosity, reflection, and imagination.
DT
At Warkworth CofE Primary School, we aim to inspire the next generation of engineers, architects, designers, chefs, and technologists.
We view Design and Technology as a rigorous and practical academic subject, and believe that a deep understanding of DT forms part of every child’s cultural capital entitlement. It enables children to use their God-given creativity and problem-solving abilities to shape the world for the better, in line with our school vision, values, ethos, and mission.
DT gives children the opportunity to design and make products that solve real and meaningful problems. This process develops their creativity, imagination, and resilience, encouraging them to consider their own and others’ needs, wants, and values. While DT draws on knowledge from other subjects such as Science, Maths, and Art, we teach it explicitly as a distinct subject — valuing its unique approaches to thinking, making, and evaluating.
Through the Kapow Design and Technology scheme, children are encouraged to be innovative and resourceful thinkers who understand the product design cycle: ideation, creation, and evaluation. We want pupils to develop the confidence to take risks, to draft design concepts, to model, test, and refine ideas, and to reflect critically on their work and the work of others.
Our DT curriculum also fosters an awareness of the impact of design and technology on society, inspiring children to become enterprising citizens equipped with the skills and vision to contribute to future innovations.
Our Art/DT lead is Miss L Good.
