At NCEA Warkworth Primary School, we believe that Religious Education (RE) is a vital academic subject that helps children to think deeply about life, belief, and the world around them. Through RE, pupils are invited to explore profound questions about meaning, purpose, truth, and values.

As a Church of England school, RE holds a high status within our curriculum – it is a core subject, taught with the same academic rigour as English, Maths, and Science. Our RE curriculum draws upon the theological, philosophical, and sociological disciplines, enabling pupils to develop rich, reasoned understanding and to appreciate how faith and belief shape human life and culture.

RE at Warkworth is not simply about learning facts about religions, but about thinking well â€“ interpreting, analysing, and reflecting. It encourages children to wonder, to question, and to recognise that exploring belief can be an intellectually rewarding pursuit.

Our curriculum is based on the Statement of Entitlement (2019) and informed by wider research and best practice in the field of Religious Education.

Through their study of RE, we aim for all children to:

  • Become religiously literate, with the knowledge and vocabulary to engage thoughtfully with belief and practice.
  • Develop theological understanding by exploring key Christian concepts and texts, alongside other worldviews.
  • Build philosophical thinking skills, learning to reason, question, and form considered opinions about life’s big questions.
  • Gain sociological insight into how belief influences individuals, communities, and society.
  • Experience the joy of intellectual discovery, recognising that RE offers a space for curiosity, wonder, and deep thought.

Through RE, our pupils learn that exploring faith and meaning is both an academic pursuit and a human one â€“ one that nurtures wisdom, understanding, and a reflective approach to life.

Our RE lead is Miss L Good.
